Hand Painting

The history of Hand Painted Photography

From the start of monochrome photography, people have attempted to add colour by hand to further improve the image. The first images were 'daguerreotypes', invented in 1839. 'Johann Baptist Isenring' is thought to be the very first hand painter, she was a 'swiss' painter and a printmaker but many others followed.

Everyone wanted their images to look realistic as possible and hand-colouring was the easiest way to achieve this. Techniques and materials varied in different parts of the world. This was from watercolours, oils, crayons/pastels and other paints or dyes were applied to the image surface using brushes, fingers, cotton swabs or airbrushes.

This picture is an example of hand painted photography which I did myself on Photoshop, I tried to make it realistic as I possibly could.
